OCES UIL Academic Team Finishes 3rd At Home Meet
Ore City Elementary School's UIL Academic team hosted a meet this past Saturday, Dec. 3, with four other schools joining OCES in academic competition. A late surge by Big Sandy enabled them to win second place overall in the team standings just ahead of OCES, which finished in a solid third.
Joining Ore City and Big Sandy were students from Hawkins, Linden-Kildare, and Union Grove.
"We fought hard for second place all day long, but in the end we were edged out by Big Sandy thanks to their high scores in the late events," said Chad Miller, OCES Principal.
OCES finished first in several team competitions, including Music Memory for grades 3, 4, and 5. Second-place team finishes went to Ore City's 5th Grade Art, 2nd Grade Chess Puzzles, 5th Grade Chess Puzzles, 2nd Grade Music Memory, and 4th Grade Number Sense. Third-place team finishes went to 4th Grade Art, fourth-grade Chess Puzzles, 5th Grade Dictionary, 5th Grade Maps, Graphs and Charts, 4th Grade Spelling, and 2nd Grade Storytelling.
Students who finished first individually in the competition were Randy Hemby (Music Memory, 3rd Grade), Carson Crosby (Music Memory, 4th Grade), Fabian Herrera (Music Memory, 5th Grade), and Lizzy Brooks (Ready Writing, 3rd Grade).
